Where "Sons & Daughters" began


Where it all began--with the lady in gold. "Sons & Daughters of Thunder" (2019) was based on a play of the same name written by playwright Earlene Hawley, with the assistance of writer Curtis Heeter.

The dapper man next to her is her husband Kent. They were the key supporters behind the 3-time Emmy nominated docudrama that was released just before COVID changed the course of history.

Here they stand in Corinthian Hall at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Rock Island, Illinois in 2014 as extras with cast members: Daniel Hale (Calvin Stowe), Jessica Taylor (Harriet Beecher) and Thomas Alan Taylor (Theodore Weld). See the full list of the cast at IMBD.

Organized by firebrand abolitionist Theodore Weld, the nation's first public anti-slavery debates at Lane Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio led to near riot conditions in the city. The shocking oratory sparked intense controversy and awakened a young Harriet Beecher (Stowe) to the horrors of slavery. Harriet was captivated by Weld's charismatic leadership, at a time when Calvin Stowe was trying to win her heart. Inspired by Weld and the debates, Harriet later penned "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and turned the tide of public opinion against slavery.
